About RBE Hub

The Renewables-Based Economy (RBE) Hub was created to track and demonstrate that renewable energy delivers innate, system-wide benefits, driving whole-economy transformations.

Building on the Global Status Report, the RBE Tracker and Hub move beyond tracking renewable deployment in isolation to exploring how renewables shape economies, societies and energy systems. Bringing together data, insights and visual tools in one place, the Hub offers a more accessible, interactive and collaborative way to understand the transition to renewables-based economies.

With fossil fuel dependence remaining deeply entrenched and global progress remaining fragmented and slow, REN21 recognized the urgent need to evolve its approach to effectively tackle the systemic barriers stalling the energy transition.

RBE Hub is created by REN21

REN21 is a global network bringing together diverse stakeholders to drive the systemic transformation necessary for a renewables-based world. Its collective mission is to build an economy grounded in renewables, advancing sustainable and equitable societies for all.

What is a Renewables-Based Economy?

A renewables-based economy (RBE) is an economy in which renewable energy is the organising principle of economic activity, social wellbeing, environmental sustainability and peaceful development. The transition to this economy relies on three main shifts:

  1. Renewable Energy Transition: Moving from fossil fuel-based systems to economies powered increasingly by renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal and sustainable bioenergy.
  2. Electrification & System Integration: Expanding the use of renewable electricity across transport, buildings, industry and agriculture while integrating grids, storage, flexibility and sector coupling.
  3. Circular & Resilient Resource Systems: Shifting from extractive and linear models toward more circular, resource-efficient and resilient systems that reduce waste, strengthen supply chains and support long-term sustainability.

Why a Renewables-Based Economy?

  1. Energy Security & Resilience: Renewable energy reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels and exposure to fuel price volatility while strengthening energy access, system resilience and long-term stability.
  2. Economic & Industrial Transformation: Renewables create opportunities for industrial development, innovation, jobs and new value chains while reshaping patterns of trade, infrastructure and economic growth.
  3. Inclusive & Participatory Systems: Because renewable resources are widely distributed, renewables-based economies can enable broader participation from citizens, communities and local enterprises in energy production and ownership.
  4. Climate & Environmental Sustainability: Renewables-based economies reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution while supporting more sustainable resource use and improved environmental outcomes.
